BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd Executed Key Agreements with TNB for Malaysia’s Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Project

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, a consortium company formed by Blueleaf Energy and Universal Peak Sdn Bhd, has successfully executed the Battery Energy Storage System Service Agreement (BESSA) and Connection agreement (CA) with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for its utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project under Malaysia’s MyBeST program by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST).
The agreements were signed between Tenaga Nasional Berhad, represented by Datuk Ir. Ts. Shamsul Bin Ahmad, President and Chief Executive Officer of TNB, and BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, represented by Datuk Ir. Raj Kumar R Gopal Pillai and Mr. Alfredo Jakub.
The execution of both agreements marks a major milestone towards the implementation and grid integration of the consortium’s 100MW / 400MWh BESS project under the Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model.
The Battery Energy Storage Service Agreement (BESSA) establishes the principal commercial framework between BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd and the TNB Single Buyer as the off-taker for the project, and functioning similarly to a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), for the provision of battery energy storage capacity and related services including system availability and capacity commitments, dispatch and performance obligations, as well as the broader commercial structure supporting grid reliability and system flexibility.
Meanwhile, the Connection Agreement (CA) establishes the technical and grid interface framework between the project and TNB’s grid system operator functions, including interconnection compliance, protection systems, metering, SCADA integration and operational coordination with TNB’s grid network.
Together, both agreements represent a critical step in advancing Malaysia’s energy transition agenda and grid modernization efforts. The project is expected to support grid reliability, improve system flexibility, facilitate greater renewable energy integration and contribute towards objectives of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Beyond the project itself, the development is expected to generate broader positive impacts across the energy ecosystem including:

  • Strengthening the operational flexibility and resilience
  • Support higher renewable energy penetration
  • Enable future grid support services
  • Contributing towards Malaysia’s decarbonization goals and creating opportunities for local industry participation in the growing energy storage sector

BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd remains committed to delivering the project safely, efficiently and in alignment with the nation’s sustainable energy aspirations.
