Universal Peak Marks Groundbreaking of BKHM BESS Project in Kedah
17 September 2026, Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, MALAYSIA – Universal Peak (UP) marked a significant milestone in Malaysia’s
energy transition with the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project on 9 September 2026
at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Industrial Area, Kedah.
The ceremony was officiated by Puan Maheran binti Manan, Chief Corporate Officer of Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Kedah
(PKNK), and brought together representatives from PKNK, project partners, industry stakeholders and local agencies and
communities.
Developed in partnership with Blueleaf Energy through BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, the project comprises a 100MW / 400MWh
grid-connected utility-scale BESS and is the first privately owned, grid-connected utility-scale BESS to commence
construction under Malaysia’s MyBeST programme.
Strengthening Grid Resilience
MyBeST provides crucial energy storage capacity to smooth renewable energy intermittency, strengthen grid stability and
support the large-scale integration of renewable energy into Malaysia’s power system.
Strategically located within the Bukit Kayu Hitam Special Border Economic Zone, the project represents an important step
towards strengthening grid resilience and advancing the objectives of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap
(NETR).
This groundbreaking marks the transition from project development into construction, reflecting the strong collaboration
between UP, Blueleaf Energy and our stakeholders in building a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
